At the 33rd Annual Volunteer Awards, Manitoba Real Estate Association (MREA) president Michael Barrett delivered a touching speech that drew spontaneous rounds of applause as he presented the MREA Quality of Life Award to two young Manitobans.
Tara Green and Duncan Cox communicate through music and creative interaction as members of an ensemble cast with Hateless Canada. The traveling school tours group has reached more than 25,000 school children and teens with its anti-homophobia, anti-bullying and suicide prevention messages.
Green battles several mental illnesses. After four suicide attempts, she realized that her life was meant to be lived, says the association. Today, her mission is suicide prevention. Through sharing her message and story, Green communicates that everyone’s life is worth fighting for.
After many years of being bullied because he is gay, Cox finally learned how to accept himself and he now helps others stand up and unite against bullying.
Hundreds of people from Manitoba’s volunteer sector attended the Volunteer Manitoba gala. Each year the MREA Quality of Life Award recognizes individuals and groups dedicated to improving the lives of Manitoba children and youth. The award is accompanied by a $2,500 donation, which the recipients will divide and share with their charity of choice.
