Letters: Winnipeg a place to watch

I read with interest your article in the October issue of REM Magazine, Publisher’s Page: Portage and Main and Human Rights.

As a born and bred Winnipegger, I have seen this city stagnate, but as of recent times Winnipeg is experiencing a sort of renaissance. Change is definitely in the air and (has been) for some time now. The factors affecting this are many, including a change in demographics and increased immigration.

There is a building boom in the new-home market. Commercially we have the new James Richardson International Airport replacing the once iconic Winnipeg International Airport. It’s homage to modernist architecture in the International Style. The expansion of the Winnipeg Convention Centre, now known as the Royal Bank Centre, is exciting to watch in downtown Winnipeg. Not to mention the return of our beloved Winnipeg Jets and the new Investors Field, home of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Also on the construction radar are many new apartment blocks as well as condo units on picturesque Waterfront Drive, a short throw from the awe-inspiring Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR).

As a Winnipeg Realtor, we saw a unique opportunity to partner with the CMHR early on. Our mandate was spearheaded by the ever-passionate and persuasive Sheldon Zamick and has managed to raise so far a staggering $1.7 million, with funds coming from all over the world. This museum belongs not only to Winnipeg but to the country as a whole, if not the world.

We are striving to get the Realtor “R” prominently displayed somewhere in the museum.

So you can see that from all that is happening, Winnipeg is definitely a place to watch.
