First month of the year is in the books! How did it go for you? Were you prepped and ready, or was it a slow start out of the gate…nursing a little bit of that holiday hangover?
Typically speaking, it’s the same thing year in and year out – “most people” take December and treat it as a “relax” month. Getting holiday mailers dropped off, shopping, spending time with family, all the fun stuff the holiday season provides us.
Most people also talk a big game about how they’re going to make big changes in the new year, “the new me.” Their motivation is so naturally high because most other people around them are talking the same way.
Forge your own path
Society has always operated on trends…something catches steam, and then everyone’s talking about, and everyone wants to be part of, over the fear of missing out.
It’s similar to when you go to a conference or a mall, and there’s an entire bank of doors right there to walk through, yet everyone is going through that one exact same door.
Why is that? It’s because people like to follow others. The thing is, though, when you follow, you just do the same as everyone else.
So when it comes to goal setting and new year planning, everyone is doing it in tandem because everyone else is doing it.
What we really need to understand is that if we want to win, and I mean truly win, (and this has nothing to do with winning over your competition; instead, it has everything to do with beating the person you’re looking at in the mirror) then we need to be thinking and acting like a leader.
Big change requires big action
By the halfway point of February, it is said that over 80% of people will fall off their new goals, their new approach to the “new me.”
Why? Because they (you) didn’t take it seriously enough. It was a thing to do when you were in the moment back a few weeks ago, partially to make ourselves feel like we’re making a change and partially because everyone else was doing it.
The difference between that 80% and the 20% who are still going is that the 20% were actually focused on what they wanted, the steps they needed to get there, and they were disciplined enough to put in the effort so they would get the results.
Big change requires big action! This is your message to stay focused on what you truly want, live a Monday starts on Sunday lifestyle, so you’re always prepared, and no matter how hard it is or how much you don’t feel like it, remind yourself that most people have already given up.
This is a similar mindset to what it takes to get your next deal.
Put in the work
Putting in the effort is a must. It doesn’t happen without it. And I know many people who put in a lot of effort yet still ask, “What else do I have to do to get a deal?”
My answer: Remember that you are in a relationship business, and you are helping people with the biggest assets of their entire lives. This is not apples, it’s not gasoline, it’s not a TV, this is real estate, and we don’t buy or sell it on a regular basis. This happens only a few times in a lifetime for the average homeowner.
Be realistic with your expectations each day. Don’t give up on your goals, and don’t get down on yourself just because you didn’t get that deal today. Instead, recognize that what you do today will set you up for what happens tomorrow.
Tomorrow could be tomorrow; it could be next week, month, year, or a few years from now.
By working on your relationships and by focusing on adding at least one new person to your database each day, you will build yourself a strong, resilient business for years to come.
One day at a time
Repeat and referral have always been the golden word(s) in real estate, and for a good reason. No matter the generation, the market, or the technology available, repeat and referral business is still the biggest source of anyone’s success in this game.
Just like your goals, they won’t come to life overnight. It will take hard work and dedication to reach them.
Money is not your solution to complacency.
Stay focused, stay patient, and take it one day at a time.
