On Thurs, Oct. 22, Royal LePage Frank Real Estate will bring REALTORS®, families, businesses and community members together in Whitby for the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation Night Light Walk Presented by TD, a national fundraising initiative supporting women and children experiencing intimate partner violence.
Participants will come together for an evening walk under the stars, raising funds and awareness while sending a powerful message: everyone deserves to feel safe in their own home.
Royal LePage Frank Real Estate is hosting the Whitby location and is inviting the entire Durham Region community to participate.
“This is so much more than a Royal LePage event. This is about our community,” says John Byers, broker of record and co-owner. “When we walk together, we are showing women and children experiencing violence that their community sees them, supports them and believes that home should be a safe place for everyone. We want families, businesses, REALTORS® and community leaders to join us on October 22 and truly light up Whitby.”
Supporting YWCA Durham
Funds raised through the Whitby Night Light Walk will support YWCA Durham, a community organization that has been serving women and families in Durham Region since 1945. The organization provides emergency and transitional housing, counselling, outreach, supportive housing and other essential programs.
Its Y’s WISH Shelter provides a secure temporary home for women and their children fleeing abuse, along with crisis counselling, safety planning, advocacy and connections to housing, legal and social services.
The need for these services remains significant. According to YWCA Durham’s 2024 annual report, its 24-hour crisis line responded to 846 calls from women in need during the year. Y’s WISH Shelter recorded 2,368 resident days and 2,637 dependent days, while 351 women had to be referred to other agencies because the shelter did not have capacity.
“These numbers remind us why showing up matters,” says Dennis Roberts, broker manager and co-owner of Royal LePage Frank. “This isn’t an issue happening somewhere else. These are women and children in our communities. The Night Light Walk gives all of us an opportunity to do something tangible together. Raise funds, raise awareness and stand behind the organizations doing this work every day.”
An invitation to the entire community
Royal LePage Frank is encouraging people throughout Whitby and Durham Region to participate, whether individually, with family and friends, as a workplace or by creating a team.
The goal is not only to raise funds, but also to create a visible demonstration of community support for survivors of intimate partner violence.
