In a sombre announcement, the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board (TRREB) shared the news of the passing of former CEO Don Richardson, a revered figure in the organized real estate landscape. 

Don’s tenure as CEO spanned an impressive 14 years, during which he exhibited stalwart leadership and left an indelible mark on the industry.

From sales representative to CEO

Don’s contributions to the real estate profession began long before his time at TRREB. In the 1970s and 1980s, he served as the director of education for the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA), where he played a pivotal role in enhancing the professional development courses necessary for aspiring salespersons in Ontario. With a career that began as a sales representative in 1971, Don’s expertise and commitment to excellence propelled him to own a brokerage in Newmarket, Ont.

A legacy of leadership

Under Don’s capable guidance, TRREB flourished into a progressive and dynamic organization. His leadership extended beyond the boundaries of the board, as he shared his invaluable insight and experience with other real estate boards across Canada. 

In recognition of his profound impact on the association and the profession, Don was honoured with TRREB’s highest accolade, the Award of Merit, in 2014. Additionally, his outstanding dedication and exemplary service to the realtor community were acknowledged in 2003 when he received the Award of Excellence from CREA.

Don will be remembered for his relentless efforts, often behind the scenes, which led to numerous advancements benefiting real estate professionals across Canada. In addition to his professional achievements, Don was known for his passion for motorcycle riding and his involvement as one of the founding members of the Realtors Care Ride.

Don is survived by his beloved wife, Avelyne, his children Chandra, Eryn, Brett, Fayth, and his cherished grandchildren, Alyssa, Tyler, Austin, April, Owen, and Travis. During this difficult time, the family has requested privacy, and therefore, there will be no public funeral service. As a tribute to Don’s legacy, donations can be made to the Ontario Realtors Care Foundation.

Reflecting on Don’s retirement in 2014, the late Hugh Foy (who was, at the time, TRREB’s director of commercial and members development) acknowledged this leader’s impactful work in an interview with Real Estate Magazine.

“The tireless, behind-the-scenes work of this quiet, unassuming leader has resulted in countless advancements that will benefit Canadian real estate professionals for many years to come,” Foy shared.

Don’s leadership at TRREB was particularly commendable as he steered the organization through a challenging period of turmoil, and his leadership was instrumental in resolving a significant challenge initiated against TRREB by the Competition Bureau.

Foy says Don’s leadership “helped to re-focus TRREB, resulting in a thriving, progressive organization that has offered its insight and experience to other boards throughout Canada.

Alan Tennant, CEO of the Calgary Real Estate Board, previously commended Richardson as a “saviour” who successfully navigated the turbulent waters, bringing stability and prosperity to the organization. Tennant praised Richardson as “one of the most thoughtful and articulate leaders I’ve ever come across.”
